This course engages students with the transmedial genre of superheroes, which has become one the most influential genres in film, television, video games, toys, and of course comicsânot to mention the cultural artifacts that are associated with its iconography. Through an examination of the genre's origins and history, its economic and aesthetic aspects, and the ideological issues that surround its narrativesâincluding representational dynamics of race, class, gender, sexuality and other vectors of identityâstudents in this course will become more critically aware consumers of popular culture media.
