An introductory course on physical principles behind the creation of diagnostic medical images. Medical imaging is one of the most exciting and technologically demanding fields of medicine. Topics include radiation interaction, radiation dosimetry, formation and quality of X-ray images, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound imaging, and radiation detection and safety. Current research on image quality optimization, image-guided radio-surgery, 3D/4D ultrasound imaging, and Monte Carlo simulations are reviewed.
