This course covers topics of structures and properties of functional ceramic materials: atomic structure; symmetry; defects; electrical, optical, magnetic, electrochemical and dielectric properties; phase and defect equilibria; charge transport; and structural and electronic phase transitions. Case studies on oxide ceramics include ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, electro-optics, shape memory ceramics, and solid electrochemistry.
